I look down at my watch and realize that I'm
running about 10 minutes late. "He's probably not on time
either...", I try to convince myself, as I walk rapidly towards
the student center. However, as I approach Brower Commons I spot
him patiently sitting on the hard concrete steps. He's wearing
the typical outfit. Black Rutgers zip up hoodie, jeans, and a
tight fitting beanie, bag slung around his shoulders he notices
me trotting towards him and stands up.
"My bad..." I utter. "Oh it's ok..." he
replies. We proceed to get "take out" meanwhile engaging
in small talk. Food bagged and ready to go, we agree to eat at
the student center. An hour and a half into our "lunch"
I finally begin the interview.
H: So how have your 2 months as KCF President been?
T: (Thinks for a long time, takes a bite out of the banana
he's eating)
That's a hard question. (Thinks some more) When I think of the
question, I ask myself "How is KCF doing?" "How
good of a leader have I been?" In many ways, it becomes many
different questions. Simply, there are times when it's hard, time's
when it's humbling, but the joys and the blessings have outweighed
all other things.
H: What has been the toughest aspect of being President?
T: Toughest thing has been realizing that I am just as sinful,
unworthy to lead. Yet I've been given this privilege to serve.
I must always remember to be Faithful, Available and Teachable,
because it's a struggle. I must understand that I'm not here through
qualifications, but by the grace of God alone. Hence, it's tough
because leading such a huge ministry you keep telling yourself
you're not the best person, but that's when you become too big
in your eyes and God becomes small.
H: What's been the best thing about being President?
T: The reminder that God uses anyone… like it says in
the Old Testament. He uses the foolish to overcome the wise, the
weak to overcome the strong. Having to fulfill the shoes of President
I realized it's not about yourself. God blesses those the world
would not consider great. He continually grants us grace. I also
realized that you grow as you serve. A lot of people are afraid
of the stress serving might bring. But, you will see that God
serves you more than you're serving others. However, the best
thing has to be witnessing God's people struggle and grow together.

Current President Tim alongside
former President Sam Kim. |
H: Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?
T: (Thinks) Wow that's a long time (thinks some more, staring
blankly at the wall) Ten years is a long time… Honestly
I have no idea. As much as one plans and believes the direction
of their lives is up to themselves, it really isn't. For example
my family would never have thought of moving to California. My
dad would never have known that God would call him to serve in
such manner. Idealistically, I pray, and I hope, that by the time
I'm 31 I'll be married and serving at my church. Also, because
so many of my roommates are going to be in seminary, I'll try
meeting up with them once a week and buying them dinner. You know,
because they'll be in need of financial support haha.
H: What are your plans after you graduate?
T: I used to be all gungho about becoming a teacher, pursuing
elementary education. But as time progresses I wonder whether
that was a selfish ambition. Of course my parents pressure me
to go to seminary here and there but I just hope I can be available
to what God desires. I intend to go to graduate school, but I
have some plans to go away, for one year or so, to another country
through some missions organization. I know I'll be available because
I won't have the burden of raising a family or anything.
H: So you're a senior huh?
T: Correct!
H: Any regrets?
T: (Without hesitation) Oh many…
H: For example?
T: Freshman year, I wish I went to more of my classes. It's
becoming a reoccurring theme. Honestly, I really wish I did better
in school. You know that whole thing about being able to make
6:10 (A.M) prayer meetings, but not 1:10 class. It's just a bad
testimony to my non-christian friends.
There are too many private ones which I can't disclose in this
interview. I'm a sinful man. I regret losing so many of the relationships
I used to have, I just got lazy. Lost so many.
 |
He might not cut class anymore, but
Tim still likes joking around with weird hair styles...
and fake tattoos. |
H: Any advice for the freshmen this year?
T: Go to every class.
H: But you didn't!
T: Learn from my mistakes haha.
Also, find a good church. One that is founded on the preaching
and teaching of God's word. Don't just be a member, but look to
serve and grow. Build and develop good relationships. As Pastor
Paul shared at a retreat. Find 1) An older more mature brother/sister
who will help you run the race. Who will guide, mentor, and teach
you. 2) Find someone to share with, run the race together, hold
you accountable, or find a group of such friends. 3) As you mature
and grow older, find younger brothers/sisters to invest in, to
share with, help grow. Finally, be sold out for Christ because
college comes and goes.
H: Was Rutgers your first choice?
T: Negative! Who puts Rutgers as their first choice? Yeah,
I used to be all bitter that I came here. But now I see that God
is and will do great things here at Rutgers. We just have to wait
and be patient. College is what you make of it.
(Gets up to throw away his trash, soon returns)
Is that it? I'm boring! No more… Interview Simon, he's a
funny guy. People love him, specially the girls.
H: So… what type of girls do you like?
T: Uhh… this interview is getting sketchy.
H: So you don't want to answer the question?
T: You seriously want me to answer it? You might run out of
ink.
H: (chuckling) Forget it…
H: In one sentence describe your best quality.
T: This is so hard because it's a lose-lose situation…
I love being with people. Whether it be hanging out or meeting
up to talk. I guess that's my best quality.
H: What about your worst quality?
T: My humor, sarcasm is sometimes bad. I guess I'm too insensitive
at times and I joke around too much. What I say is not received
the way it was intended to. I've hurt and I know one sister that
cried because of me. I hate it when girls cry.
H: So you make a lot of girls cry huh?
T: Nah, just one.
 |
Look at that pose! No wonder they cry... |
H: What kind of person were you in high school?
T: I wasn't stereotypical. I played soccer so I had some friends
who were jocks. I did the school athlete thing, but I was also
very asian. I hung out a lot and shot pool. All that stuff. I
was also a church boy. Everyone knew me as a church boy. Very
chill… laid back.
H: Have you matured since then?
T: I would say so. I'd say it'd be kind of sad if I didn't.
On a worldly view I have, just through what my family and I went
through. Spiritually I have as well, through KCF, church and other
friends… but importantly through God.
H: Describe yourself in 3 words.
T: (Ponders for a minute)
Ok, one word.
(laughs and ponders some more) Pretty… laid… back.
H: Uhhh… that was three!!
T: What?..
H: If you could be granted one wish, what would it be?
T: If it wasn't a super holy Christian answer It'd be…
to erase my credit card debt.
H: How did you manage to get in debt?
T: Let's just say Plastic is evil. Money is evil. I hate money…
H: Any last second remarks?
T: To KCF, our goal and theme this year is Colossians 3. Particularly
verse 1-4. It states…
"Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your
hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand
of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.
For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.
When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear
with him in glory."
Not only this year, but for the rest of your lives. Let's do that
through investing our time and lives on things that matter. Don't
be afraid to go against the flow.
H: Thanks! You realize this is only part one of our series
of interviews?
T: WHAT?! You crazy son…
